Imagine if you were the lucky candidate enrolled to a famously prestigious school by lottery drawing. What school, you ask? Hope’s Peak Academy, on PSP, rated one of the best in the world! An institution accepting of those blessed with gifted and talented abilities where all can reunite as one. Each student is labeled with a title as a “Super High School Level” with their talent following right after. The variety of talent ranging from fashion models to novelists to even gang leaders. Imagine that you could interact with those people, not as an inferior, but as an equal. As SHSL Good Luck! But not everything is as it seems, and before you know it, it’s a fight for survival in the school under complete quarantine. The rule being: “If one kills off another student without getting caught by the others, they will be allowed to leave.” (Dangan Ronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc for PSP and PSP Vita)
The story follows Makoto Naegi, a young boy whose luck won through the lottery in getting enrolled into Hope’s Peak. With an optimistic nature and heart full of hope, he stepped into the school awaiting happiness and succession ahead, only to be confined within the school with 14 of his classmates with the same intentions. Makoto meets up with his old friend who’s made a successful career as a singer, a girl of the same age, Sayaka Maizono. A strange bear-like creature named “Monobear” greets them in their “student orientation” and states the rules to living in the school and the last rule with drastic emphasis.
The other SHSL’s are confused and reject the thought of murdering their peers but Monobear persists and hands a tape to each student containing sentimental content in them, as it boosts the tension. Sayaka, severely traumatized by what she’s witnessed, is left with disorientated behavior in dark contrast to her usual cheeriness. Makoto manages to calm her, as she slumps into his arms sobbing, terrified by the events so far. She stays a night within Makoto’s room to repel her hysteria as Makoto sleeps in her dorm in alternative.
The next day, Makoto is struck with shock and fear as he finds Sayaka dead against his bathroom wall, a knife penetrating her womb. As the students assume suspicion on him, Makoto must investigate the scene to clear his name and claim vengeance for his dead friend. Soon trial begins!
Dangan Ronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (coming out in February) is a mixture incorporating elements of Battle Royale and Phoenix Wright, in which students compete with each other in trial and interrogate with the sides of life and death thinning on each student. The game features 6 chapters, each presenting a new crime and a new aspect contributing to the plot. You play first person as Makoto Naegi as he faces the many problems and twists in this life of mutual killing. Will you make it?
