Middle School War Zone, AKA. Field Day
Field day- a day of fun for some, a nightmare to others. This Field Day specifically- 2014, was an interesting year. On the eighth grade end- the team most expected to win, the Bad News Basiles, were somewhat disappointed because they lost first place to Grant’s Gladiators, which was surprising considering that during the Tug-of-War, their places were reversed. The BNB (Bad News Basiles) still finished high, in second place, with the Maloney’s Men in Black coming in third. A lot of 8th-grade-only sports turned field day into more of a testosterone fest, with lots of arguments breaking out because of disagreements between players and referees, different teams, and even within the same teams. Competitiveness increased from 6th and 7th grade, but in many places, the enthusiasm stayed the same. But when the time came for the teams to rally support, most teams pulled it together and cheered as loudly as their over-used lungs could.
The team names between grades were more than a bit different, for example, the “Battagliese Bandits,” (8th grade) compared to the “one-eyed one-horned purple flying people eaters” (7th grade). Although that homeroom did have a colorful name, the athleticism of the Rohan Rebels beat them out for first place. 6th grade's, didn't have such a smooth beginning, with a reschedule, similar, but not nearly as bad as last year's. At the new time, they enjoyed the hottest and most beautiful day among all the grades. First place went to the "Bulldogs", second to the "Cerulers" and third to the "Dauntless Delias." Despite the change of activities, names and overall experiences, memories were made (hopefully the fun kind) that will last a lifetime (or until the end of the school year), making field day a success in its real mission.

Visiting Washington D.C.
The White House. The Washington Memorial. The Changing of the Guards. All of which were visited during the annual eighth grade Washington D.C. trip. Due to the fact that traveling to an entirely different state would require a large amount of time- we began our journey at approximately 5:00 in the morning. And yes- getting up that morning was nothing short of torture.
However, everything from there was only uphill. Because of the vast amount of eighth graders attending the trip (Almost the entire grade!), we were separated into five different coach buses, where we spent the next five to six hours.
When we arrived at our destination- we immediately began touring the area. We visited a few monuments- and all of the excitement of being in Washington D.C. somehow seemed to wash away the anger and irritation from the lack of sleep (Mostly). At night, we attended our “Pizza DJ Dance Party” (The name was not of our creation, we promise)- and despite everyone being utterly exhausted by that time; we managed to still find some energy to party until 11:00- which was when we were allowed to go back to our hotel rooms, and sleep.
The next morning, we woke up, ate breakfast- and started our day with multiple museums. This was honestly my favorite day- breaking off into your somewhat chosen groups to explore the history and knowledge practically bursting from the walls of the rooms. We walked around the area- stopping at a food court to meet, before going to the White House; where, of course we stopped to take multiple selfies- before proceeding to our “dinner cruise.”
Despite the rumors, hysterical crying, and unnecessary and frankly- weird flirting with random people radiating across the boat; it was a surely a night to remember. Most the students hung out outside of the boat- which of course, did usually result in water splashing them in the face- and then, them complaining because their ‘perfect dress’ was ruined (Boohoo).
But overall, the Washington D.C. trip- although having its moments of doubt, was surely one of the most memorable experiences of I, and many other classmates entire eighth grade year. -Arianna C.

Farewell to Eighth Graders
For the last three years, our Eighth Graders have been persevering through middle school, working to get good grades and make friends. Through sixth, seventh, and eighth grade, these students have been working hard and trying their best, with guidance from Anthony Wayne Middle School’s teachers and staff. Although the Eighth Graders will be leaving us soon, they have experiences and memories from our middle school that will stay with them forever. Overall, we would like to wish them lots of luck in high school, and hope they keep up their good work and grades. We will miss you at Anthony Wayne, Eighth Graders!
Lunch Prices On The Rise. Smart or Dumb?
What's the one thing that you usually don't get at the school cafeteria? Obviously, the fruit or any healthy stuff for that matter. Why? Either they may not look that appetizing or eating healthy just isn't your thing. Whatever the matter is, prices for lunch are on the rise. The usual lunch should come with a milk and fruit but doesn't. And now, they have raised their prices by 40 cents, just to include something that kids are going to throw out anyway.
When I was in elementary school, we used to get a lunch, and it would come with a milk and a fruit. Plus, you could get a snack and still get money in return. In my experience with a 5 buck lunch budget, I'm only walking away with a dime and I'm not even buying a milk! The problem? The prices are too dang high! What's more, they are making kids buy something they don't want, and charging them extra! What's the solution? Some say there is none; to which I may agree, but if there was something that could be changed it would be to bring back the prices to where they were and don't make kids buy what they don't want. If you are going to "make" them have it, don't charge them extra! If they don't want it, don't make them take it. You'll just find it in the trash. As an eight grader here, good luck to everyone here now and whoever is coming next year.

7th and 8th Grade Spring Band Concert
Music is everywhere. Whether you are listening to it with headphones on your bus ride to school, or taking lessons to learn how to make it, music is a prominent portion of our lives. On May 19, 2014, the Anthony Wayne Middle School held its annual 7th and 8th Grade Spring Band Concert in the Cafetorium. While the call time for students was 7:00 PM, the concert started at 7:30.
Throughout the evening, the band students played a total of seven songs. These included “Appalachian Expedition”, “Last Full Measure”, “Perthshire Majesty”, “Impact”, “Les Miserables”, “Voyage to the Edge of the World”, and “Hosts of Freedom”. Before “Hosts of Freedom,” the band conductor Mrs. Basilicato acknowledged the many eighth graders participating in band and gave some awards. Afterwards, one of the eighth graders conducted the last song, “Hosts of Freedom.”
Overall, the seventh and eighth graders did an amazing job in the concert and hopefully will continue to work with music later in their lives.

Dancing With the Stars
Sadly season 18 of DWTS came to end Tuesday night. The finalists were Amy, Candace, and Meryl. Monday night, the semifinals James Maslow was kicked off, but ironically was voted to do an encore performance during the finale. Also, Arianna Grande, Iggy Azelea, and Cody Simpson preformed their hits. To make things a little interesting they showed each finalist reacting to some of their favorite dances they performed while on the show, and showed the viewers some behind the scenes drama. After that, it was time for the finalist to show their 24 hour challenge to the world. A 24 challenge is when the dancers are only given 24 hours to choreograph and perfect a dance. The tension was even higher due to the fact that this would determine who would be crowned the winner of Dancing with the Stars. In the last few minutes of the show Meryl and her partner Mark won the title of champion and celebrated. Hopefully next season will be as exciting as this one!

Mother's Day
Mother’s Day is just around corner! This year, Mother’s Day is on Sunday, May 11th. All across the globe, people celebrate and appreciate their mothers for everything they do. A day has been annually dedicated to our mothers since 1905. Mothers do an abundance of things for us. From kissing our “boo-boos” to hugging us after a bad day, mothers are extraordinary! So, let’s show our mothers some love by giving them a heartfelt gift.
Here are some ideas:
1) Jar of Hearts - For this fantastic gift, you will need a Mason jar (or any jar), colored paper, a pen/marker, and a ribbon. First, take the colored paper and cut out about 4” sized hearts. Using a pen or marker, write down cute, little phrases on the hearts. You can write reasons why you love your mother, fun memories, meaningful song lyrics, etc. Finally, use a colorful ribbon to tie around the jar. This gift is super special!
2) Coupon Book - This is a classic! All you need are a few sheets of paper, some colorful markers, a hole puncher, and a loose binder ring. First, cut 4” by 6” rectangles out of the paper. Now, use your markers to write down different coupons on each rectangle. Here are some ideas: “This coupon is valid for 1 free hug,” “This coupon for a free massage,” “This coupon is valid for a homemade dinner,” or “This coupon is valid for some alone time.” Be creative! Decorate these coupons, and punch holes in each of them. Finally, attach everything together with a binder ring! This is gift wonderful!
3) Collage - This gift is pretty simple! All you need are some pictures of you and your mother, poster board, and a bit of glue. Layout all the pictures on the poster board and arrange them the way you like. Glue the pictures down and add a few decorative embellishments. Quick and easy, this gift always makes for a heartfelt gesture.
Happy Mother’s Day!

Field Day is Coming Up!
So you have your team name, team colors, and shirt decorating is most certainly underway. But what else are you missing before your team takes the field?
Field Day Instructions
1. Make sure to wear sunscreen, because you don’t want your skin to match the red team’s shirts!
2. If you are planning on spraying your hair to match your team’s colors, please do it at home! The field is supposed to be green, not rainbow (plus, some people are allergic or it can get in other’s eyes).
3. Remember that you cannot wear Eye Black, since it can get in your eyes and cause irritation.
4. Most importantly is water. In order to get the full experience out of Field Day, you need to stay hydrated! (Fun Fact: According to cardiologists you are supposed to drink half of your body weight in fluid oz. each day. So if you are 100 pounds you are supposed to drink 50 fl oz. a day, plus more if you are exercising!)
5. If you are planning to cut your shirt, please make sure it follows school guidelines! Or, if you are afraid you might have cut it too short, wear a tank top underneath!
6. Just have fun, and make sure to cheer your team on!
Field day dates:
6th Grade- May 22nd
7th Grade- May 20th
8th Grade- May 21st
May the odds be ever in your favor!

8th Grade History Day
The time has come again! The 8th grade Social Studies teachers have assigned the history day project, which is the project where students build giant replicas of history-related things. Some people are doing the London eye, the twin towers, the pyramids, stone hedge and much, much more. All of this is due June 5th and will be on display that day. So students, look around, enjoy, but don't touch the projects! All the students will be working very hard to get all of their projects in on time. So from over here in the newspaper club, we wish you all a good luck! -Parker L.
Latin 1 Success at State Competition
Congratulations to the Latin 1 class, who have just taken back a first place trophy from the state competition! Now, they will be able to proceed to the national competition- which, hopefully with our support, they will win!
The team consisted of five members of the Latin class, all from the eighth grade Latin 1 class: Danielle Cross, Nayef Kiame, Sangjun Ko, and Rohan Jayanth.
“It was not how I expected it to be,” says Danielle Cross, “I’m happy that we won, and other activities throughout the day kept it interesting.”
The national competition, which they were invited to is held in Georgia, in July, after summer break starts. Although the members who are going may vary, we are all very proud of the team, and hope that they bring back another victory!
With their determination, I’m sure that they will. -Arianna

Acting Workshops!
Get ready to laugh, cry, and watch in awe, because Anthony Wayne's second annual acting workshop is taking place in May. Auditions were held on Monday! The list of students selected to participated was posted on Wednesday in the cafeteria. Here are some words from students who got in.
Were you nervous to audition?
Taylor O. : Yes, because we had to audition in front of everyone.
Are you excited to participate in the workshop?
Kathryn D. : Yes, because I did it last year and it was fun.
Will you be nervous to perform in front of an audience?
Faith B. : No, because I've done it in the past and I know I'll have more fun, so I'm not going to waste my energy on being nervous.
I am personally very excited to participate in this program, and I think that everyone should come to the Acting and Talent Showcase in May.

Missing Malaysian Flight
The Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 lost all of its signal and communication recently, and not long after, completely vanished from all known radars. However, this flight was going hundreds of miles off of its destined course, actually backwards, when it was still detectable.
No one knows why this plane turned around though, and there are many investigations regarding this disappearance that has raised suspicions. For example, it has been discovered that two of the passengers, 18-year-old Pouri Nourmohammadi and 29-year-old Delavar Seyed Mohammad Reza, were using stolen passports to get onto the flight. These men were Iranians; however, US officials doubt that they were terrorists and had access to groups of the sort. The missing plane was last detected near Southeast Asia, and so far, all evidence thought to be linked to the flight has been from other things, none directly relating to the missing Malaysian flight. Azharuddin Abdul Rahman, the general of the Malaysian Civil Aviation Department, stated, "For the aircraft to go missing just like that ... as far as we are concerned, we are equally puzzled as well.” That this Malaysian flight, carrying 239 people, could just vanish into thin air, was driving investigators off the edge.
There is no known cause for the plane’s disappearance, yet millions of possibilities. People think technical malfunctions, crazed passengers or crew, hijackers, and so forth, could have changed this planes course. Although accurate information is still not available, clues in the form of debris, and a large amount, have been found, leading to the conclusion that the flight may have exploded. They are mostly sure that the flight ended in the Indian Ocean, far away from any landing point, leading to the conclusion announced by Malaysia’s government a few days ago. All passengers are presumed dead. This was crushing news and many people could be seen screaming and crying, with one lady even fainting and being rushed to the hospital. Despite the sorrow of the situation, flaws have been evaluated and may even help to prevent situations such as this in the future.

Q: How does it feel to be in the play?
A: I feel so special!
Q: Are you happy with how the play is turning out?
A: Yes, we are doing great and will be ready for our show. (Araydates)
Finally is one from two 6th graders:

The Power of the Human Brain
We all have heard people say that, "the human brain is an incredible thing." Well, that is true and I know that first hand. How? I read about it, but not in the way that you think... Focus and read the next paragraph. If you can read it, you'll know the true power of the human mind.
Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoatnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteers be at the rghit pclae. Chances are that you were able to read the paragraph above. How, you may ask? Well it turns out that when humans read they don't actually read the letters in the middle of a word, but instead, all that matters is that the first and last letters are in the correct place. As for the letters in the middle, you can put them in any order you wish. So when someone tells you that spelling counts, think again! -Parker L.

Portal Problems
As many teachers and students have already realized, the website formerly known as My Grade Portal, has been having many technical difficulties. The initial shock has been replaced with the realization that a parent password is necessary, though not for long. Right now, and for the past few weeks, the website has been going through its Beta phase to fix any existing problems and update to prevent future ones. A few new things include “friendlier interface for finding student data, 100% mobile-enabled: works with all phones and tablets without having to switch to a different mobile site, themes for changing the look and feel of the website.” (OnCourse Connect) Student logins will work by Friday, and can be changed, by the student, just in case you might have let your old one slip. -Danielle C.
As many teachers and students have already realized, the website formerly known as My Grade Portal, has been having many technical difficulties. The initial shock has been replaced with the realization that a parent password is necessary, though not for long. Matilda on Broadway!
“Children of the world unite!” is the main message behind the Broadway sensation Matilda. Recently seen by Anthony Wayne’s Band and Chorus members, Matilda definitely was a big hit with the students. Featuring lasers, a crazy head mistress, and some awesome strobe light effects, Matilda was an eye-capturing show. The story line (which kept closely to the book and movie if you’ve seen them), is about a girl who is unloved and dreams about a better life. Matilda loses herself in the world of books and tells her own stories to the one person who will listen to her-the librarian. Matilda proves herself to be a very headstrong girl, who refuses to back when she feels the situation is unfair.
Some of the favorite songs were “Naughty” and “Quiet”, were entertaining to listen to and very catchy. They had you singing along and dancing (inside your head of course!). The last song was a crowd favorite as it featured a ton of colored confetti. The ending was in no way predictable and left you wanting more of this fantastic story. The only thing that could’ve been more exaggerated was Matilda’s telekinesis ability. However, that one thing definitely could not dampen the excitement that every one left with after seeing the play. So a big Thank-You to Mrs. Boz and Ms. Sabitino! -Kathryn D.
Foreboding Fatalities
A strange string of deaths has recently occurred on and near the beach of Kice Island, Southwest Florida on January 20, 2014.40 Nine males and 16 females (including one who was pregnant), for a total of twenty five whales, yes whales, which, when added to the 8 found less than a week earlier, raised the death toll up to 33. They were pilot whales, which usually wash up on Florida’s shores, due to their close linked family behaviors and inability to leave the weak behind. This survival of the fittest along with the weakest gets this specific breed killed more often than others, but this many at one time…very unusual.
Although no official cause of death has been announced, many of the whales, after dissection, were found very thin and with “empty stomachs.” Hunger might have been the cause, which leads to the even larger question: What might be the cause for an apparent shortage of food? This seems to also have been the cause of death for eleven whales, from a pod of 51, which washed up in the Everglades. Sonar from the Navy is also being questioned, because it has been connected, loosely, in the past. The investigation by the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) into the mass loss of 6,000 pound, 24 foot long life is still ongoing. -Danielle C.

I’m here to give you an update on FAME! Let me tell you, it’s “Hard Work!” With only a month left until show time, and all this snow, FAME is a madhouse. Between staging musical numbers, boosters, bios, T-shirts, vocal practice, custom fittings, set painting, and Chocolate sales we are all on our toes. Some say it won’t get done, but don’t worry the show must go on. Plus Mrs. Benavides always pulls off amazing shows. Speaking of the show, it’s only a month away! The dates are March 21st and 22nd. It’s going to be “Hard Work”, but “Bring on Tomorrow,” when we let it shine! ~Jordan F.
With all these snow days, we're wondering...
The Funny Assembly That Taught Us All Dignity and Respect
David J. Flood came to our school to talk about dignity and respect. Mr. Flood was very relatable to our 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. He talked about his two children, 12 year old daughter and autistic 15 year old son. Also, he brought up students from the audience and gave them prizes such as a gift card to Dunkin Donuts. Jordan F, in 7th grade called it, “a very emotional and good performance.” I was able to relate personally to what Mr. Flood said, as my brother is autistic and same age has his son. Many people went home crying, but those tears sprang from a lesson that we will all remember. ~ Rockie S.
Welcome to the Book Fair Diner!
We have books, snacks, and raffles that you can win!
We all hope you had a fun time at the book fair held in our media center. Everyone went to the media center with their LALB classes January 23-24. Although, we were supposed to go January 22-24, but we had an snow day that day. At the book fair we had all different types of books; some not even available yet in our library. "I thought it was good because I like books. But, people who only bought snacks and school items might have a different opinion," says a 7th grader. Also we had different kinds of snacks, some were, donuts, cookies and cupcakes. "The snacks were my favorite part, everything tasted delicious," shared a 6th grader. Some of the school items were 3-D bookmarks, pencils, pens, and erasers.
For our more competitive peers, the PTO had raffles for us. You could have guessed how many hearts were in a jar or you could have guessed the book that was shredded. You could even just put your name in a jar after you bought a book. The answer for the book raffle was the Hunger Games. These were great new features to our book fair, and another great year. -Rockie S.

E-Books at the Anthony Wayne Library!
Have you ever wanted to get a book during the weekend, breaks, even in the summer? Now our school has E-books. Many study halls have gone to do a trial of the newest program that the library has to offer. For right now Mrs. Greer is only letting us take out 3 books at a time. However, not all books are available because not all publishers and authors want their books as E-books.
If your book is not available, do not worry, there is a hold button and you will be informed the same way as if it was a real book. Have a suggestion of a series or books? Tell Mrs.Greer! She would be happy to look into the availability of more E-books. So don't hesitate to ask. Keep on reading, folks!

A Drop in The Weather
The movie “The Day After Tomorrow” totally called it. The Polar Vortex has descended upon the US. It was so cold that Chicago’s Lincoln Park Zoo had to keep their polar bear, Ananna, indoors!
But what exactly is a polar vortex?
It’s a circulation of strong counter-clockwise moving upper-level winds that are usually found in the Northern Pole. These winds usually keep in the arctic region, occasionally dipping into Canada. However, this time it had moved unusually south, covering much of North America.
The weather is not like “walking in a winter wonderland” in fact, it was extremely dangerous to be walking around outside without being properly dressed, you would be in danger of frostbite in just five minutes! over 2,600 flights were cancelled, water pipes burst, and there have been about 17 reported deaths. Taking into account the wind, temperatures were in the negatives, it reached as low as -21 degrees in Madison, Wisconsin!
The extreme cold has passed for now, but still remember to bundle up! it has been a pretty warm winter so far, but it seems that the real winter weather has finally arrived! --Audrey H.

Remember to bring your cans to the CANteen!
We had a Halloween canteen now we are having a winter canteen. Instead of buying clothes for the canteen, it is now time to save money and raid your parents' pantry for a couple of cans. This is because it is the winter and many families in need of a nice and hot food. The school is asking that everyone bring in a nonperishable food item for our local food pantry. When you arrive at both main entries you can drop off your cans. Remember tickets will be on sale for $15 and will be on sale Thursday, January 16th & Friday, January 17th at lunch. -- Rockie S.
Anthony Wayne Middle School Winter Band Concert
This year the 7th and 8th grade band students performed a winter concert on the 20th of December, 2013. The concert took place in the Cafetorium of our school. Overall, these students worked very hard and and deserve great appreciation.During this concert, the Anthony Wayne 7th and 8th grade band performed a total of five songs - one of them in which the chorus also sung. One seventh grade student said: “It was amazing, and I loved the band.”
The names of the songs performed were “Christmas Fanfares”, “Fum, Fum, Fum”, “Latin Bell Carol”, “Hannukah Dance”, and “Holiday Sing-Along”. “Christmas Fanfares” was a fun, upbeat song that had melodies of various Christmas tunes mixed throughout the piece. “Hannukah Dance”, another song that the 7th and 8th grade band played in the concert was a quick song based off of the Hannukah song “Sevivon”. “Latin Bell Carol” was a Latin version of the Ukranian Bell Carol with a quick tempo. “Fum, Fum, Fum” was one of the more difficult songs that the band had to play. It was energetic and had a drumset and bass guitar in in, unlike some other band songs. Their final piece, “Holiday Sing-Along” was a fun and lively sing-along composed of holiday melodies such as “Deck the Halls”, “Jingle Bells”, “O Christmas Tree”, and a couple of other songs. Overall, the concert had a wide variety of songs, each of which contributed to the holiday spirit of the students of Anthony Wayne Middle School.

Memory Marred by Mistranslation
He spent 27 years in prison. He ended apartheid in South Africa. He saved an entire country from economical implosion. Who is this man, this freedom icon, this father of a modern nation? He is Nelson Mandela, but on Thursday, December 5th, he left us forever. His memorial was a congregation for big name world leaders like Barack Obama and ordinary citizens alike. Although he rests peacefully in his casket, his body has not yet arrived at its final destination, due to thousands and thousands of people waiting in a line stretching down the streets to see Mandela’s body just one last time.
The part of the funeral being most scrutinized is the man who stood so near to all these important figures, providing sign language for the deaf on international television. To an average person, his signing looked normal but according to signing professionals and the deaf community, it was all just gibberish. It was recorded that he did not even use the symbol for Mandela, despite the focus of the ceremony being completely on the freedom figure. People were calling him a fraud, a disgrace to Mandela and embarrassing to South Africa. But this is not the first time Thamsanqa Jantjie, the man in question, has publicly signed incorrectly. In fact, at a rally with the South African President some time back, he was hired and no one knew what he was signing then either. It is under investigation just who hired him. The company that he was hired from went underground shortly after the incident. Mr. Jantjie defended himself on Thursday saying that he is schizophrenic and continues to suffer from hallucinations despite taking medication. He said he saw angels and other things while standing up there moving his arms around, and that someone should have told him about it, and that he would have stopped.
Nonetheless, all this has caused us to do is forget that the main focus was originally on the late Nelson Mandela. He once said, “Let freedom reign. The sun never set on so glorious a human achievement.” Although at the time he was speaking of the end of apartheid in South Africa, it does apply to his own life also. The sun might have set on his 95 year lifetime on earth, but it will never set on his achievements. Because they will be in our hearts and minds, (and eventually, textbooks) showing us all the good we can do in one lifetime. We might not win a Nobel Peace Prize like he did in 1993, but by following his example we can try change the world like he did. We can follow in his footsteps, we can do something meaningful with our lives, we can even be known around the world but no one can ever, will ever replace Nelson Mandela. -Danielle C.

The Winter Choral Concert at 7:30pm
Tuesday, December 3rd!
In the chorus concert, the 6th and 7th and 8th graders worked very hard to prepare for this wonderful gift that the school gives to relatives, parents, and anyone who loves a good show! The titles that the 6th graders sang were “Sparkle”, “Light a Candle”, and the combined piece with the 7th and 8th graders, “Sleigh Ride”. The 7th and 8th graders sang the titles “Reflections of Hanukah” , “Mr. Santa”, “Merry Christmas Mozart”, And the combined piece.
“Merry Christmas Mozart” was my favorite to sing in the concert because it was a big mash up of classic Christmas lyrics with the melodies of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. This piece included “Deck the Halls”, “The Holly and the Ivy”, “Dashing in the Snow”, and “Jolly Old St. Nicholas”. This, in my opinion, was the best piece that we sang. I hope that this gets you excited for the school concert on December 20th. You’ll have to see for yourself what songs the AWMS chorus will bring us.

9th Annual Veteran's Day Luncheon
On 11/11/13, AWMS held its 9th annual veterans day luncheon. All students who had a family member or close friend who was a veteran brought them to share memorabilia and photos and eat a delicious lunch and dessert. The event was held in the media center from 12:30-about 2:00. 120 people attended, including 38 veterans. My grandfather, who served in the navy during the Korean War was one of them. It was a great way to honor the brave people who fought for our country.
The luncheon started with the Pledge of Allegiance, and continued with The Star Spangled Banner played by a few of Mrs. Basilicato's saxophone students. After that each student introduced their veteran and where and when they fought. It was amazing hearing people speak so proudly about their brothers, fathers, grandfathers, and even my friends Aunt! Then an amazing buffet lunch was served with catering from many different restaurants including Anthony Francos. We had some delicious homemade deserts while we watched a slide show that brought tears to many eyes. It had the names of all the veterans who attended and pictures showing them when they were in the military, navy, coast guard, army, or any other branches.
After the show, the veterans all went outside to take a group photo that will be displayed in a frame that was signed by all of them. Later, they listened to some patriotic music. The 7th and 8th grade band and chorus had practiced some songs, and from what I heard, it was as great as the rest of the luncheon! The event was a great way to honor the veterans and celebrate the bravest people in our country. Thank you to everyone who has fought or is fighting for our country and happy (Belated) Veterans Day!! – Justine D.

Mix it Up Day!
At first when your homeroom teachers asked you to bring in a playing card you were confused, right? Little did you know that card would choose your new lunch table on Mix it Up Day! On October 29, the 7th graders brought a printed out playing card to lunch with them. As, we moved into the cafeteria, we saw posters hanging of the ends of the lunch tables. One, for example, said “all of the eights.” Another said “only red queens.” Many people didn't understand this new arrangement, but I have the whole story behind it.
Mix it up day was a nation-wide initiative that made you switch tables and meet new people. The purpose was to get to know people in the grade you aren’t as friendly with. Meeting new people can lead to new friendships, and new memories. Many reviews I hear were negative, but personally I liked it. The idea of meeting new people has always been something I hardly thought about. This also helped many students have a fresh new start this year.
If you made new friends during this special event, then good for you! Just remember the golden rule: “Make new friends and keep the old. One is silver and the other one's gold!” -Jordan F.

Red or Dead by Danielle C.
Drug and alcohol abuse, both very terrible things that some people are pressured, tricked or even willingly turn to. They probably wouldn’t if they really understood the horrific consequences, both long and short-term. The best way for them to learn is to directly educate. And what better way to do that, than by including messed up hairdos and pajamas?
Every day last week, Anthony Wayne did just that and called it Red Ribbon Week. Monday was “RED-Y to turn down drugs” day, and as the name implies you had to wear something red. The day most people will remember best is probably the “Drugs are WACKED” day due to the hilarious things people came to school with. It is amazing what some people have got in their closets. Things ranged from the tame backwards hoodie to bizarre guy-tutus. The No-Hat rule was relaxed to allow for things like burgers, donuts and even a full head of snakes! Another activity that saw a very large amount of was the “Drugs are a NIGHTMARE” day, more commonly called Pajama Day. To top things off, it was pretty rainy most off the day, supplying the lullaby and perfect atmosphere for a mid-day snooze. Even we were still at school, that didn't stop some people from dozing off in their very comfortable attire.
The end of the week was a bit more sober, due to the large amount of “dead” people walking around the school. Along with the “BAND together against drugs” theme, where people wore band or music-related shirts, there was also this activity where the eighth grade student council members wore a black shirt with the words “Every 15 Minutes” (which was also the name of the activity), painted their faces white and refrained from talking for almost the entire school day. This symbolized that every fifteen minutes, someone dies from drug or alcohol abuse.
Although the other activities did help to raise awareness, this one was the most affective by showing students how horrible it would be to lose someone because of drugs or alcohol, therefore discouraging them to partake in it themselves.
there will always be some people who don’t really participate at all, thinking that it was “stupid” or “just a waste of time” but if you can save just one life, it’s all worth it. The moral of the story- “Don’t do drugs,” or as some others were saying, “Crack is whack.” However you choose to remember it, you should always know that you should not use drugs and alcohol. Ever.

8th Grade Food Drive and Rockin' Surprise
Congrats to the Blue Team for winning the food drive! The Blue team had a total of 454 cans while the Gold team had 268. Unless you’re a math whiz and already knew, the total amount of cans was 722. This all went to our local Wayne food bank and it already helped 14 needy families. Although helping the hungry was the main reason for the food drive, it is undeniable that the completion was a great motivator, and so was the prize. And it didn’t disappoint!
In dedication of the blue team, a heavy metal concert was given at the eighth grade lunch (seventh period). The band mates who were rocking out on guitars to a song by Iron Maiden were Mr. Basile, Mr. Robjohn, and the blond-for-a-day Mr. Maher. Even though many people think it’s long gone, it’s not over yet. Other events are coming up on the eighth grade calendar, one of which is a “Show Your Team Spirit,” contest with the team who wears their respective color (Blue or Gold) the most winning. These are part of a year-long competition, in which the Blue team is already in the lead. This is open to suggestions, so don’t be afraid to share your ideas. And a big thanks to all the guidance counselors and 8th grade teachers for organizing this interesting new idea. I can’t wait to see what happens next. –Danielle C.

Pink Bows: The Knot of Hope
Imagine millions of people gathering in one place, all at once. All there for the exact same reason. All there to send out an identical message and to support the same, inspiring cause, Breast Cancer Awareness. They go because they want to educate the world about how dangerous it is. They want people all across the world to stand up, and do something about this deadly disease.
Although the odds are 1 out of 1,000 for a man to get breast cancer, women have an outrageous 1 out of every 8! Every person supporting getting rid of breast cancer counts! Did you know that just in the United States, 39,620 women were expected to die in the year 2013 from breast cancer? But thankfully, this number is slowly decreasing. “These decreases are thought to be the result of treatment advances, earlier detection through screening, and increased awareness.” says www.breastcancer.org. However, I believe this decrease is happening because people scattered all across the US are making a difference in a breast cancer patient’s life, one step at a time.
This is something you can also do! Show your support daily by doing little things that can all add up. For example, pink is the color associated with breast cancer, so wear pink this month! Wear pink leggings, pink sweatpants, pink shirts, pink shoes, pink tank tops, pink shorts, pink hair accessories, pink socks, pink shin guards, and pink soccer socks. Try getting pink jerseys, breast cancer t-shirts, and wear pink bows this month. Go all out pink October 2013! You could even dye the ends of your hair pink to show eternal support. Even the slightest little change in your wardrobe can inspire someone else to do the same. Support is contagious. Some people just need a little inspiration in order to show their support.
Also, try going to local events to show how you support the survivors of breast cancer. And hey, if you know someone who currently has breast cancer, was recently diagnosed, or even survived breast cancer, why not inform them about it? For example, in Parsippany, NJ there is the Making Strides of Parsippany, NJ on Sunday, October 20, 2013 at Mack-Cali Business Campus (1 Campus Drive, Parsippany) at 8:00AM. There, you will walk to raise money for The American Cancer Society. After you get there and park, you should go and register, or you can register online, and even in a group! But, the most important thing you could do is spread the word. Make sure you tweet, update your status, make comments, and just try hard to spread the word about National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, this and every other upcoming October! If others know, then the word will grow! -Jeyda B.
Student Council Elections
Anthony Wayne student’s elections took place. Students ran for the positions of treasure, president, vice president and sectary. They campaigned throughout Anthony Wayne Middle School, working hard to win over the votes that would secure their position on the council. Endlessly they worked, by presenting their views to make the school a better place.
Finally after 2 weeks of campaigning, the students voted on who will make their school better. Then we waited for the moment to come: Jenna Maguire won president, Luke Berninger became vice president, Emily Colonna for secretary, and Jimmy He is the treasurer. We are sure that these winners will bring us a good school year. And good luck to them. We do believe that no matter who won, you all would have done a good job! -James A.
